Oxymoron

Legitimate Rape is an oxymoron.

This guy is just a moron.

Todd Akin, Republican

How do those of us who are blessed with more than a handfull of brain cells even begin to unpack the offensive willful ignorance of Todd Akin. In his “apology” he said that he had just got his words wrong. Even if we were to leave it at that, what would that say about somebody who will be a public speaker and representative in one of his country’s highest institutions?

But we can’t just leave it at that. In his right wing, anti abortionist frenzy, his main mistake was expressing publicly what a lot of his fellow conservative, Christian, republicans believe. Their moral stance is based on ignorance and a theological understanding on a par with the uneducated Muslim villagers in Pakistan who want to kill an 11 year old girl because she “might” have committed blasphemy. When asked whether abortion should be legal in the case of abortion, Todd Akin said the following;- Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.

This mindblowing ignorance comes from a Congressman. A senior and ambitious politician who desires to weald power in America and perhaps abroad. Either he simply doesn’t understand what doctors are telling him, or he is making it up, or I wouldn’t recommend using his doctors!

Then there is the “if” word and then that phrase, Legitimate Rape. Ignoring the oxymoron of “legitimate rape” (because that is a can of worms I don’t even want to open), the word “if” I suppose is meant to indicate that he doesn’t believe women are being honest in saying they were raped.

Now comes the idea that if a women is truly raped the “whole system” closes down. Does he mean by divine intervention? Has he ever seen a woman’s body except in the porno pictures he probably hides between the pages of his bible? Good grief, whether you think it is a good thing or not, most junior school children probably have a much better idea of human biology than he does.

Finally he concedes that rapists should probably have “some” kind of punishment. Who knows what this pea-brain really means by that; a fine perhaps? Cleaning the floors of the local Church? Going a week without porn?

Sometimes as women we become complacent about the progress our sex has made in terms of rights and understanding. Dickheads like this serve to show us how far we still have to go.

Because Akin is not alone. There are worse and more dangerous cretins like him all over the world. Closer to home though, you don’t have to look very far in his own political party to find others with similar opinions. And these people might be in power next year. The republican presidential candidate shares most of Akins’ views on abortion and his morals are governed by a fairly fundamentalist off-shoot of Christianity.

Does America really want an oxymormon as President?

  1. I spent a few hours researching this and found that he’s not the only one… there are a number of “pro-life” websites promoting these anti-scientific ideas: http://www.christianliferesources.com/article/rape-pregnancies-are-rare-461
It’s actually a good thing, he’s lifting the lid and showing what his kind really think. Hopefully female voters will respond appropriately.

  2. Cassie,

    This is so important.

Akin is a raving moron, no doubt. But I like that you folded in the story from Pakistan as well. The media should give more attention to the violence against women across the country and the globe. Akin is a sideshow, admittedly an especially disgusting one. But as much attention should be paid to a Republican Party platform that would say to a teenage girl raped by her father that her body continues not to belong to her.

    A powerful post.

    Tom
